A new star is born…

MVP David Astwood with Ed

I suppose there are some days in a sportsman’s career when everything just clicks into place. Think back to Ben Johnson at the 88 Olympics, Devon Malcolm steaming in at the oval in 94, Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards defying gravity at the 88 winter snow fest, Dennis Taylor wowing the stands at the crucible in 85, the list can go on and on. But now we can add one more name to that illustrious list… David Astwood at Primrose Hill Pitch 2, 2006.

Allwyn shapes up for a big hit

Yes, this was the evening when David announced himself on the big stage. Teams all over league 3 will now have to stand up and take note of this rising star. With a flawless performance with the bat, making it all the way round the bases a staggering 4 times, not forgetting one monster of a home run which arguably clinched the game in the final innings this truly was an individual performance which could easily be used to rewrite the softball coaching manual. The feat is made even more impressive when you take into consideration the level of pressure which was on him due to constantly lingering near the top of the averages for the last two seasons, and the fact he is still recovering from a career threatening injury. Who would have thought him capable of such a display? Thursday 23rd June 2006 really was the day a star was born.

We were expecting this Imagination...

Although you probably only want to hear about David’s performance unfortunately we do have to mention some others. Ned had a nightmare in the fourth innings, dropping three catches at first base (admittedly Allwyn’s radar was unusually off kilter). Les shocked us all again by making it two catches in two games with a fine effort in the outfield and Joe ‘lego lightning’ Lygoe showed great pace between the bases.

The report cannot end without a little thank you to the opposition who with their refreshing friendly attitude made for a most enjoyable evening. I am afraid to report though they did beat us at drinking later in the evening with team captain Jaki Burn necking a reported 7 tequilas. Must do better next time...

Quote of the day

“I like having Ned behind me. He’s a big hitter.” Joe ‘Lego Lightning’ Lygoe

Home Runs: Ned Spires, Allwyn Fernandes, David Astwood, Edmund Hulme 2

Catches: Charles Astwood, Allwyn Fernandes 3, Les Abraham
